"Trip to the Inter FM"
"76.1 Power Morning with JoJo Otoni!c" JoJo's familiar voice drifts
in the morning air and reluctantly, I open my eyes and get myself ready to
face the challenge of another brand new day.
Listening to InterFM every morning has become such a habitual thing
that waking up without it is like taking a shower with your clothes on.
It's just not right. It always amazes me how the DJs can be so energetic so
early in the morning because I can never imagine myself getting up at five in
the morning just to entertain others. I have always wanted to meet these "super"
people and to know what exactly is happening in the studio behind the sound box.
Then my chance camec
On May 29th, ten of us from the Seminar went down to the radio station
and was given a tour around the studio. I went to the studio, expecting to find
producers in their white hats, technicians standing by, and a DJ sitting comfortably
beside the mic with a cup of coffee in his hand. But I was wrong.
I was brought into a carpeted room, and in the center of the room stands
a huge controlling board full of buttons, two CD players on the right of the board
and a computer on the left. The room is warm and bright, very different from the dark,
crowded space that I had in mind. Our tour lady explained to us that in InterFM,
everything is programmed in the computer, and the only person in charge of the program
is the DJ him/herself. All the jingles are recorded in the computer and all it takes
is a touch on the screen to have the sound effect whenever and however the DJs want them.
It was really neat. She also told us that with the DJs having an average height of 180cm,
the tables are especially designed so that it is just right for a DJ to work standing up.
It makes sense because with all the work the DJs have to perform themselves, it is nearly
impossible for them to sit around and have their cup of coffee. I guess that is one of the
reasons why InterFM DJs always sound so enthusiastic, and with them standing up, it gives
them a better sound too.
I was really amazed at how computers have found their way into even one of
those traditional business where I thought human resource would be the main force, and at
how every details were covered and taken cared of to make the production smooth and
efficient.
This trip really gave me an insight into the significant role played by
computers these days. It is everywhere and it has become so popular that it wouldn't be
an exaggeration to say that we cannot live without it.

We thank our Hawaiian DJ, Vance K, who kindly and cheerfully gave us a
demonstration on how the computer system works and did a live performance.
We were all very impressed. Thanks Vance!
