Submitting A Written Thesis for The Degrees

A. A Written Thesis for the M.A. and the Conferment of M.A.

The M.A. will be awarded to a graduate student who successfully completes the M.A. program.
A graduate student who applies to the M.A. must submit three copies of a written thesis to the committee through his/her advisor. The process of submitting the thesis is as follows:

1. Entry of a title of the M.A. thesis (November)
With your advisor's approval, please make a entry of a title of your M.A. thesis, filling out the form at the Academic Registrar's Office. The details will be notified on the bulletin board in October. Please note that if you decide to quit the entry, you must inform the Office.

2. Submitting a thesis (the closing date will be determined by the department)
Please follow the instructions notified on the bulletin board. A title of your thesis, including the subtitle, should be the same as you have registered.

3. Interview
You will have an interview about your thesis. The date and other details about the interview will be notified by mail.


B. A Dissertation for The Ph.D. And the Conferment of Ph.D.

1. The Ph.D. awarded for the completion of the graduate work

The Ph.D. will be awarded to a graduate student who successfully complete the doctoral program.

A graduate student who applies to the Ph.D. must submit three copies of his/her written dissertation and necessary documents with Degree Application Form to the committee through his/her advisor.

If you are interested in the special support program aimed to help your dissertation work smooth and maintain the standard of your research, please consult with your advisor or Course Tutor.

2. The Ph.D. awarded for a dissertation

The Ph.D. will be also awarded to a candidate not only whose written dissertation receives final approval, but also whose academic background is approved at least as profound as that of a graduate student who have completed the doctoral program (It is called Òthe approval of academic background.Ó See Article 5 of the Rules of the Degrees).

A candidate who applies to the Ph.D., in accordance with Article 5 of the Rules of the Degrees, must submit three copies of his/her written dissertation and necessary documents with Degree Application Form, specifying which field of the Ph.D. he/she is applying, to the President of Keio University.

Please reconfirm the details about the process of applying the degrees at the Academic Registrar's Office in advance. It is ruled that within a year of receiving a written dissertation, the committee shall discuss final approval of it, and give the related examinations or discuss the approval of academic background.
