Master's Degree Program in Taxation Policy and Management - Program Description

A. Degree requirements

Program completion requires students to be enrolled at the Graduate School of Business and Commerce for two years and complete at least 30 credits (With a minimum of 22 credits from lectures and a minimum of 8 credits from seminars). In addition, students must complete at least 8 internship credits at the National Tax Administration.

These credits require submission of an individual research thesis, and passing a final examination based on thesis and seminar presentations. The thesis is to be written under the advisement of Keio academic staff. Internship performance at the National Tax Administration will be assessed by review of internship reports.

Upon completion of these requirements, students will be awarded the Master of Arts in Business and Commerce degree from Keio University. This degree will be recognized as a completion of the JJ/WBGSP in Taxation Policy and Management.

B. Language of instruction and course methodology

All courses are conducted in English. To achieve the objectives of the Program, courses will have a practical and applied orientation. Instructors will focus on analysis of examples and case studies.

Most courses will consist of lectures and seminars. As a supplement to regular course programs, special programs will also be organized. These will include half-day seminars led by guest speakers. Such seminars will be organized around a specific taxation issue and will be designed to stimulate the exchange of ideas and the identification of potential research topics. Speakers will be drawn from distinguished individuals in the fields of taxation and economics. These will include senior government officials and administrators responsible for Official Development Assistance (ODA) projects.

Weekly seminars will be organized each semester to facilitate student research in various aspects of taxation policy and practice. The Master's thesis, a program requirement, will be the outcome of student participation in these seminars.
