" Interview with Mr.Fullante "

I interviewed Mr.Fullante, who is the visiting associate professor
of Kanda University of International Studies on June 16, 1998. Firstly I'd
like to introduce him. He was born in Philippine and grew up in the U.S.
His major is the internal and comparative education. Now he goes to Waseda
University as well as Kanda University of International Studies. Next, I'd
            like to talk about our discussion.  The contents are as fellows;

Takayuki (T): What's your creativity in your class?
            Mr.Fullante (F): Change the theme.
            (T): Change the theme?
(F): Yes, I always change the theme if students are not interested in the topic.
And I always ask students "Why" questions, because many Japanese people
often say "Me too" or "I have same opinion with ***". That is, I always
get students to say their opinions on their own words so that students can
state their opinions in every situation.
(T): I heard this university has a good English Teaching System. Please tell me
                 the feature of this university.
(F): First, there are many foreign professors. I don't know the rate, but in
comparison with Waseda, there are many foreign professors. This is a good
advantage. And next, we professor emphasis the speaking skill in even
reading class, so students have lots of opportunities to speak English
compared with other university students. The third is that class is not
large, I mean, even in maximum class, the class consists of 32 students.
The last is that there are many mixed language classes, which means that
the mixed class is composed of freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors.
Freshmen can listen to lots of experience seniors have and feel relaxed
because there is no silence in the class owing to talkative seniors.

(T): Where is creative in Japan? For instance, as to the Japanese buildings,
                  do you think these creative?
(F): No, these are very boring to me, because Japanese buildings have no
characters, that is, almost all of buildings are same shapes, however,
I think old buildings such as temples and gardens are very creative.
As for the old buildings, building itself and roof, especially angle,
are very creative. In the old buildings, people's creativity is in there.
As for the garden, Japanese people don't break the nature, which means
                  people express as it is.

              Comments
I think the last one, mixed class, is very creative because, as Mr. Fullante
says, students can listen to many opinions from wide age of people and rethink
their opinions. In this sense, our "Change and Creativity" class is as same
as that class. We, therefore, should make much more comments in class and
              create good relationships one anther.
